THE COMMON APPLICATION PERSONAL ESSAY

The Common Application is used by most colleges and universities in the United States as their application platform. One of the largest parts of the application is the Common Application personal essay.

The personal essay is your best opportunity to give college admissions officers a sense for who you are and how you would show up on their campus.

How do you write a personal essay that shows admissions officers who you are?

  • Focus on what you are passionate about.

  • Explore important pieces of your life experience.

  • Use specific examples that show what you care about.

Keep your focus small and write from your own voice.

College admissions officers know what 17- and 18-year-olds typically do and as well as what they usually sound like. There is no reason to try and be someone other than yourself. Instead, focus on who you are and what you have done.
